To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland, further to his answer of 21 March,Official Report, column 174, (i) how many pre-payment certificates were issued and (ii) how many prescriptions were dispensed on presentation of a pre-payment certificates, in each financial year since 1979–80 and for each health board in Scotland. To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much was raised through the levying of prescriptions charges by each health board in Scotland in each financial year since 1979–80. [18188]

The information for each health board for the financial years 1979–80 to 1993–94 is set out in the tables. The amounts of revenue shown include NHS prescription charges paid by patients in respect of drugs and appliances dispensed by community pharmacists, dispensing doctors and appliance suppliers. NHS prescription charges recovered from patients under health board post-dispensing checking arrangements are also included.

The amounts shown do not include the sums collected in respect of the sales of pre-payment certificates which are not deemed to be the payment of a charge under the NHS (Charges for Drugs and Appliances) (Scotland) Regulations 1989, as amended.
