HC Deb 05 April 1995 vol 257 c1242W
Mr. George Howarth

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what allowance is contained in the police funding formula for the abnormal costs in Gloucestershire as a result of the Frederick West investigation and the cost of policing royal households. [17646]

Mr. Maclean

The formula was never intended to take account of specific, large-scale criminal investigations in individual police force areas. If the impact of a particular operation looks likely to threaten the efficiency of a force, consideration can be given to special grant. Protection commitments are taken account of in the formula both by the element for existing police establishments which is included, and by an additional allocation for certain security-related commitments.
