Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence pursuant to his answer of 2 February,Official Report, column 609, if he will list the exact date of, and the signatories to, each memorandum of understanding signed with the Government of Nigeria since 4 May 1979.

Mr. Freeman

[holding answer 22 March 1995]: The answer given in March Official Report, column 609, referred to defence exports-related MOUs. No central record of MOUs is kept by my Department and a comprehensive list could be compiled only at disproportionate cost. MOUs not related to defence exports were signed with the Government of Nigeria on 24 November 1980 and 14 July 1992. It has been the general policy of successive Governments not to reveal details without the prior approval of the other Government.
