To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proposals he has to remedy the late running of major defence projects; and what was the total amount of cost overruns in the current financial year. [17375]

My Department has instituted several initiatives in recent years to improve the timeliness of delivery of major projects. These initiatives include tauter contracting; improved risk management; better training and guidance for project managers; and procedures for better estimation of in-service dates. Information on Defence equipment cost control performance was published in March 1995 in the MOD's departmental report, Cm 2801, a copy of which is in the Library of the House.
