HC Deb 05 April 1995 vol 257 cc1192-3W
Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Education (1) what was the cost of abolishing the Universities Funding Council; [18604]

(2) what was the cost of abolishing the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council; [18603]

(3) what was the cost of establishing the Higher Education Funding Council. [18606]

Mr. Boswell

There were no direct costs in abolishing the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council and the Universities Funding Council. The two councils occupied the same building in Bristol and were already operating as a joint executive before they were dissolved on 31 March 1993 and re-formed on 1 April 1993 as the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The only direct costs of establishing the Higher Education Funding Council were the £500,000 running costs grant paid in 1992–93 to run the new council alongside those it was to replace.
