HC Deb 05 April 1995 vol 257 c1247W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the jobs that have been lost to agencies in his Department in the past two years that have(a) been taken over by contractors and (b) disappeared. [18327]

Mr. Howard

[holding answer 4 April 1995]: Some 545 posts in the Prison Service have been, or are in the process of being, contracted out. These are mainly involved in court escort work. No posts in the other executive agencies have been contracted out in this period.

The number of staff in the Prison Service and the Forensic Science Service has increased over the last two years. The number of staff in the Fire Service college has fallen from 202.5 in March 1993 to 188.5 in March 1995. In the case of the UK Passport Agency, the number of full-time permanent staff has decreased from 1,292 to 1,263 but permanent part-year appointments have increased from 120 to 190.
