To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many students have benefited from the European Union's social fund provision, enabling them to undertake courses in(a) universities and (b) colleges of further education. [17260]

The estimated numbers of beneficiaries based on application by universities and further education college for European social fund in 1994 in Scotland are as follows:

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what guidlines he has given to universities and other colleges concerning the training allowances given to mature students by way of the European Union's social fund. [17262]

Mr. Kynoch

The guidelines issued annually to all potential applicants for European social fund including universities and colleges set out the items of expenditure which are eligible for assistance. The guidelines cover how the allowances to students and other trainees are to be treated.
