To ask the Secretary of State for Health who sanctioned the change of logo for the National Blood Authority; and if royal approval was(a) required and (b) sought. [18028]

The national blood service logo was introduced by the National Blood Authority in April 1994 as one part of the authority's identity and communications review.

Official advice was that it was not necessary to seek formal permission to remove the crown from the logo.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what is the cost(a) per unit and (b) in total of A-positive type blood discarded during (i) 1993 and (ii) 1994; [18020]

(2) what is the cost (a) per unit and (b) in total of AB blood discarded during (i) 1993 and (ii) 1994. [18019]

The average cost of type AB blood and of type A-positive blood is £35 per unit. The information about blood discarded is not available centrally.

The National Blood Authority has made no decisions about collection of fresh frozen plasma for clinical use. The matter is under consideration.
