Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of the(a) male and (b) female prison population in Scotland are from ethnic minority groups. [17859]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The subject of this question relates to matters undertaken by the Scottish Prison Service. I have asked its chief executive, Mr. E. W. Frizzell, to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from D. A. Stewart to Mr. Jimmy Wray, dated 3 April 1995: Lord James Douglas-Hamilton has asked the Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service, Mr. E. W. Frizzell, to reply to your Question about the percentage of the male and female prison population in Scotland from ethnic minority groups. I am replying in his absence. Information on the ethnic origin of persons received into Scottish penal establishments has not been collected. The new Scottish Prison Service Prisoner Records Database which is currently being implemented across the Service, however, will enable us to provide such information after the Summer.
