HC Deb 31 October 1994 vol 248 c946W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners have contracted AIDS/HIV in prison in each of the last five years.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Paul Flynn, dated 31 October 1994: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about AIDS/HIV in prison. There is only one documented case of a prisoner who clearly became infected with HIV whilst within the prison system in England and Wales. This infection occurred in 1993.
