HC Deb 26 October 1994 vol 248 cc666-7W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether his Department organises receptions for those expressing an interest in public appointments for the first time; how often they are held; what is the annual cost; and how many people attend.

Sir John Wheeler

To date, no Northern Ireland Department has organised a reception for those expressing an interest in public appointments for the first time. However, Baroness Denton, as Minister with responsibility for women's issues in Northern Ireland, recently held a reception to encourage women in public appointment. My right hon. and learned Friend and I were in attendance and those present included both women who hold public appointments and those who did not but might be encouraged to consider putting themselves forward. Senior departmental officials involved in the public appointments process were also present. Some 97 people attended and the cost of the reception was £920.
