To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what hostage taking there has recently been of United Nations personnel in Liberia; what has been the outcome; and what representations there have been about this.

In early September, 43 United Nations military observers were detained by soldiers of the National Patriotic Front of Liberia. The President of the Security Council issued a statement on 13 September condemning the detention of the observers and demanding their release. By 20 September all had been freed.
