HC Deb 26 October 1994 vol 248 c669W
Sir Trevor Skeet

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has about the type of nuclear reactors built for electric power production in Armenia; and when the power station is likely to be commissioned.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Armenia's only nuclear power plant is at Medzamor, 25 km south of Yerevan. The plant consists of two Soviet-built VVER 440 pressurised water[...]eactors. Both reactors were shut down in early 1989 as precaution following the Armenian earthquake but the Armenian Government are aiming, with Russian [...]sistance, to bring unit 2 back into service as soon as [...]ssible, with unit 1 to follow. The Armenian [...]vernment intend to operate Medzamor for [...]proximately seven of its remaining 20 years' design life, and in the meantime to bring alternative generating capacity on stream.
