To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been received into prison for fine defaults in 1994 to the latest available date.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Ms Joan Ruddock, dated 24 October 1994: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many people have been received into prison for fine defaults in 1994 to the latest available date. Provisional information for January to August 1994 shows that 13,619 persons (12,688 males and 931 females) were received into Prison Service establishments for fine default.
