§ Mr. BoswellSince 1985, one dental school has closed in England. This school—part of University college London—closed following a review carried out by the former University Grants Committee in the light of the Government's decision to reduce the overall United Kingdom dental intake in line with manpower requirements. Information for other parts of the UK is the responsibility of my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland, for Wales and for Northern Ireland.
§ Mr. McCartneyTo ask the Secretary of State for Education how many dental schools provide training for dentists in England and Wales; and if she will give details on the number of places offered by each dental school for each year since 1985.
§ Mr. BoswellThe number of places offered by dental schools are determined by reference to a recommended national intake set by the Department of Health. 359W Recommended intake targets for individual dental schools are allocated by the Higher Education Funding Councils.
The recommended intake target for home, EC and overseas students for dental schools in England from the academic year 1985–86 onwards is set out in the table. Information for Wales is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Wales.
