§ Rev. Martin SmythTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the amount per pound which would need to be added to income tax to raise a sum equivalent to the amount raised by prescription charges for the national health service.
§ Mr. AitkenThe expected income from prescription charges in 1994–95, including receipts from the sale of prepayment certificates, is approximately £350 million, for the United Kingdom as a whole. This is equivalent to about one fifth of the yield of 1p on the basic rate of income tax.
