The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Questions about the transfer of mentally disordered offenders, and the delays surrounding such transfers.The most up-to-date information on the number of transfers held centrally is for 27 June 1994. On that day there were 174 mentally 85W disordered prisoners awaiting transfer to NHS psychiatric facilities of all types—local psychiatric hospitals, medium secure units and Special Hospitals. Of these approximately forty per cent. would have been awaiting transfer to a medium secure unit.I regret that the detailed information you request on the delays surrounding transfers is not collected centrally and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
