To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the situation in Malawi.

Malawi's first multi-party elections were held on 17 May as part of a peaceful transition process, bringing President Muluzi's United Democratic Front to power. My right hon. Friends the Foreign Secretary and the Minister for Overseas Development have both met the President since his election. The new Government face formidable social and economic problems, but have made a firm commitment to poverty alleviation, which is a key focus of our aid programme in Malawi.
