Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many permanent jobs have been created as a result of the activities of the London Docklands Development Corporation, and in which local authority areas these jobs are located.

The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (Viscount Ullswater)

Precise figures (either gross or net) for permanent jobs created as a specific and direct result of the activities of the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) since 1981 are not currently available. However, an Employment Census conducted by the LDDC in 1992 reported that there were 51,466 jobs in Docklands. This represented a net increase of 24,266 permanent jobs from the inception of the LDDC in 1981.

These were located in the following London Boroughs:

Number
Tower Hamlets 31,069
Newham 9,482
Southwark 10,895
Total 51,466

The LDDC are currently undertaking a further census, the results of which are expected towards the end of the year.
