HL Deb 10 October 1994 vol 557 c92WA
Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate of the amounts spent by the parties to the conflict in former Yugoslavia since the beginning of hostilities to the latest convenient date on (a) arms and (b) ammunition.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We have no reliable statistics available about the amounts spent by the warring factions on arms and ammunition since the outbreak of hostilities.

Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the estimate of the amount spent by (a) the United Nations and (b) other bodies on humanitarian aid, including transport and related costs for Yugoslavia to the present date and what amounts (if any) have been contributed by the former Yugoslavian republics; and

What is the cost to date of the United Kingdom's contribution to the United Nations humanitarian aid, including the cost of transport and aircraft, and the cost of the provision of armed forces in support of United Nations programmes.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The latest available United Nations estimate of spending by UNHCR, WHO, UNICEF and other UN agencies, excluding UNPROFOR, is US $1.567 billion.

We have committed £173.5 million in humanitarian aid to the former Yugoslavia.

The cost of the UK's military contributions to the UN Protection Force and the Sarajevo airlift is £280 million (including estimated costs to 31st March 1995).

No figures are available for any funds contributed by the former Yugoslav republics.
