HL Deb 30 November 1994 vol 559 c37WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about the detailed programme of work of the Technical Commission provided for under the 1994 Accord for the resettlement of populations uprooted by the armed conflict in Guatemala; whether, in particular, it will conduct a survey of the numbers and locations of the internally displaced, and the political and logistical needs which have to be met for a return of the people to their homes; and what resources have been allocated by the United Nations to this project.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

The Technical Commission has started to identify those people in need of resettlement under the Accord, due to come into force once a peace agreement is signed. Further work is, however, needed to assess the scale of the problem. It should then be possible to decide the level of funding required.
