HC Deb 03 November 1994 vol 248 cc1270-1W
Mr. Cyril D. Townsend

To ask the Secretary of State for Health when there will be sufficient secure accommodation for juvenile offenders in Greater London.

Mr. Bowis

The provision of secure accommodation for young people whom they are looking after, including juvenile offenders, is the responsibility of individual local authorities.

The Government have made capital funds available to build an additional 170 secure places nationally for criminal justice purposes. Sixteen of those places are to be provided within Greater London by the London borough of Southwark. London boroughs may also have access to additional places being planned by authorities around London, including a new 16—place unit by Essex county council.
