To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what are the estimated costs of the proposed new body to investigate standards in public life in respect of(a) premises, (b) hon. Members and (c) civil servants supporting it; and how many civil servants will be involved.

Arrangements for the setting up and operation of the standing committee on standards in public life are not yet completed.

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister appointed the chairman of the committee on standards in public life after consultation with the Lord Chancellor; he appointed the members of the committee following consultation with Lord Nolan, and with the leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Liberal Democratic party.
