To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the prospects for an improvement in Sino-British relations (a) pre-1997 and (b) post-1997.

Mr. Goodlad

We aim to intensify our practical co-operation with China on the basis of shared interests both in relation to Hong Kong and more widely. We have put forward a number of proposals to that end and hope that they will provide the basis for an increasingly co-operative long-term relationship.
