Mr. Donohoe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, on how many occasions in the past year the spouse of a Minister in her Department has travelled abroad at public expense to accompany a Minister on public duties, and what has been the total cost to public funds; and on how many occasions such travel has been undertaken at own cost.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

[pursuant to her reply, Official Report, 27 October 1994, c. 626]: There have been no occasions in the last year when the spouse of a Minister in the Department for Education has travelled abroad to accompany a Minister on public duties at public cost. On four occasions, a Minister was accompanied, but in no case was this at public cost.
