HL Deb 01 November 1994 vol 558 cc56-7WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the likely yield of taxing child benefit (a) for all taxpayers; (b) for the 40 per cent. taxpayer only; and what is the likely net yield after allowance for the cost of administration.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Lord Henley)

The information is given in the table.

Yield in a full year 1994–95 £ million
Child benefit taxed as:
Father's or lone mother's income —All taxpayers 1,200
—40 per cent. taxpayers only 300
Mother's or lone father's income —All taxpayers 650
—40 per cent. taxpayers only 40

The cost of administration would depend on the method used to collect the tax.
