What steps are being taken to ensure that the protection of the environment (including the operation of the "polluter pays principle") and the achievement of sustainable development become fundamental to all operations of the World Trade Organisation.

The GATT has already undertaken work on trade and the environment which will be transferred to the World Trade Organisation. At the Marrakesh Conference in April, Ministers endorsed a Decision providing for further development of the work programme and for a trade and environment committee to be established within the WTO.
