§ Mr. MorganTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what representations he has received from(a) the South Glamorgan county councils and (b) others in relation to the funding of the Canton area traffic management scheme; what decisions he has made and announced in relation to grant aid for the scheme or further studies in relation to it; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RedwoodSouth Glamorgan county council submitted a proposal for a £1.5 million scheme last year and the hon. Member wrote in support. Under current arrangements for transport grant the Department can support only schemes costing over £5 million. Funding for smaller schemes has to be found from the unhypothecated annual settlements for capital and revenue spending. It is possible that elements would be eligible for strategic development scheme assistance. The council was advised of our conclusion on 12 January.
