HL Deb 23 May 1994 vol 555 c25WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When they expect the European Court of Justice to give a ruling on the legality of the embargo placed by Greece on the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

There is as yet no indication when the European Court of Justice (ECJ) might offer a ruling. We have made clear our support for the Commission's decision to refer Greece's action to the ECJ. We hope that this will lead to an early lifting of Greece's measures, which we consider to be unjustified.

Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their present level of representation in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia; and whether they will increase it, pending the arrival of adequate humanitarian supplies and the total lifting of the external blockade.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

There are currently two diplomats at the British Embassy in Skopje. A third diplomat is expected to join the staff in June 1994.

Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has lodged a claim for compensation against Greece in respect of losses resulting from economic sanctions.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We are not aware of any such claim.
