HL Deb 18 May 1994 vol 555 cc10-1WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the light of the reports sent to them alleging that many of the refugees who returned from the camps in the state of Tripura, India, to the Chittagong Hill Tracts found that their homes and lands had been occupied by settlers and by the Bangladesh Army, they will propose to other Governments of the European Union that the EU missions in Dhaka send a joint mission to the territory to report back to their governments on these allegations.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We are actively considering with our European partners how best to monitor the situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Our High Commissioner visited the area in April and spoke to refugees who had returned from India. They told him that almost all had returned to their own land, although some had preferred to move to other areas.
