§ Mr. MacleanFigures obtained from the vehicle inspectorate—an executive agency of the Department of Transport—show that 48,857 roadside exhaust smoke/ emission checks were carried out in Great Britain in the period 1 April 1993 to 31 March 1994. A total of 587 prohibitions were issued as a result of these checks.
