§ Mr. PendryTo ask the Secretary of State for Education what assessment he has made of the time given to sport in the national curriculum, following the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority's review.
208W
§ Mr. Robin SquireMy right hon. Friend has no power to specify how much time should be allocated to physical education or any other national curriculum subject. This is a matter for individual schools. However, the national curriculum as proposed is expected on average to free up the equivalent of 20 per cent. at key stages 1, 2 and 3 and 40 per cent. at KS4. This is to allow more scope for teachers to exercise their professional judgment.
