HL Deb 11 May 1994 vol 554 c89WA
Lord Denham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What has been done to follow up the Franco-British initiative to assist the United Nations in its preventive diplomacy launched by the Foreign Secretary in his address to the General Assembly on 28th September 1993.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

Since the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Alain Juppé and my right honourable friend launched their joint initiative, officials have been working with the UN to see how best we can help the organisation. Following those discussions, the UK and French permanent representatives to the UN handed over to the Secretary-General on 29th April detailed information on the support we can provide, including, for our part, mobile communications equipment and illustrative lists of personnel who might be made available for preventive diplomacy missions.
