Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the total number of prisoners in custody in England and Wales on the first day of each month from April 1992 until the latest month for which figures are available;

(2) what was the total number of remand prisoners in custody in England and Wales on the first day of each month from April 1992 until the latest month for which figures are available.

Responsibility for these matters has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply.

Butler to Mr. Martin Redmond dated 4 May 1994: The Secretary of State has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Questions about (a) the total number of prisoners and (b) the number of remand prisoners in custody on the first day of each month from April 1992 until the latest month for which figures are available. The available information for the number of prisoners in custody is for the last day of each month. It is given in the attached table for the period March 1992 to February 1994.
