HL Deb 04 May 1994 vol 554 c66WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether there has been any change in the policy laid down in The Health of the Nation of using alcohol units as the means of advising the public about sensible levels of drinking, and of informing the consumer about the alcoholic content of different drinks.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Cumberlege)

Information about sensible drinking has been given in the form of units of alcohol for a number of years and we have no plans to change this. InThe Health of the Nation we said we would seek agreement with the alcohol trade associations on a format for the display at points of sale of customer information about the alcoholic content of drinks in terms of units of alcohol. Discussions with the drinks industry are still in progress.
