To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much research into the causes and treatment of Alzheimer's disease has been funded by(a) the Government, (b) the private sector and (c) the voluntary sector for each of the last five years.

The main agency through which the Government support biomedical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council which receives its grant in aid from the office of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The table shows the level of research into Alzheimer's disease funded by the MRC between 1988–89 and 1992–93—the latest figures available. The level of research undertaken by the private and voluntary sectors is not available centrally.
