HL Deb 30 March 1994 vol 553 c55WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What arrangements they intend to introduce for informing parents of their right to withdraw their children from sex education classes in state schools.

The Minister of State, Department for Education (Baroness Blatch)

The updated Parent's Charter, which will be launched in April and distributed to every home in England, will include information about the right of parents to withdraw their children from sex education in maintained schools. We also intend to issue shortly guidance to schools on the new arrangements for sex education, including the right of parents to withdraw their children from all or part of any sex education provided in any maintained school, beyond that required by the National Curriculum. The guidance will emphasise the importance of schools informing parents about their sex education policies and programmes.
