Ms Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average daily cost to the NHS of using(a) a private psychiatric hospital bed and (b) an NHS psychiatric hospital bed in each of the last five years.

The average daily cost to the national health service of using a NHS psychiatric hospital bed in each of the last five years is shown in the table. The annual accounts and financial returns of health authorities do not separately identify expenditure incurred specifically on the purchase of healthcare outside the NHS.
