§ Sir John WheelerAt 1 January 1993, there were 12,989 female staff in Northern Ireland civil service, which is 43 per cent. of the service. There were 1,282 staff—4.3 per cent. of the service—who self-reported a disability and, of these, 463-1.5 per cent. of the service—were, or had been, registered as disabled. The Northern Ireland civil service does not monitor the ethnic origin of its staff.

At 1 March 1994 there were 108 female staff in the Northern Ireland Office, HCS, which represents 52 per cent. of the Department. The number in grades 1 to 7 was as follows:
