To ask the Secretary of State for Education what steps he is taking to encourage the rapid development of a national broadband optical fibre network.

§ Mr. Boswell
The Government have encouraged the higher education funding councils to establish a new administrative framework to support and develop the national broadband optical fibre network known as Super Janet. Fifty-nine higher education institutions and research centres are currently connected and it is intended to connect at least another 50 users over the next three years.
