HC Deb 28 March 1994 vol 240 c487W
Ms Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what statistics his Department has for each of the last four years on the number of accidents involving heavy goods vehicles where the operator of the heavy goods vehicle is found not to hold a heavy goods vehicle operator licence.

Mr. Key

The information necessary to provide the statistics requested is not at present collected; consideration is being given to how these statistics might be collected in the future following a meeting with the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Vehicle Inspectorate and the Local Authorities Co-ordinating Body on Trading Standards last December.

Personal injury road accident data are collected by the police and reported to the Department: those accidents involving heavy goods vehicles where the operator does not hold an operator's licence are not at present distinguished from those where such a licence is held by the operator. The Department is pursuing with the Association of Chief Police Officers and individual police forces how more precise statistics might be provided.
