To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what has been the change in the size of the home civil service since 1987; and what change is expected in the next seven years.

Since 1987, the size of the civil service has been reduced by 51,480 to 546,340 the lowest number in the past 50 years.

Plans for the next seven years are not available, but plans for the next three years are published in the "Statistical Supplement to the Financial Statement and Budget Report", Cm 2519, a copy of which is available in the Library.
