HC Deb 28 March 1994 vol 240 c594W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment she has made of the efforts of the responsible bodies to make an early diagnosis and assessment of children with autism; what is the current assessment of the prevalence of autism in children; and how many autistic children have been so diagnosed.

Mr. Bowis

It is primarily a matter for the statutory authorities to monitor the arrangements for assessment in their area. It is estimated that the prevalence rate of autism is between four and five per 10,000 population.
