To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is the difference between the price index for Japan on page 31 of the January edition of OECD "Series A Monthly Statistics of Foreign Trade" and the index of average values on page 23; and if he will make a statement as to the effect of each on calculations of the competitiveness of Japanese exports to Britain.

Definitional differences between the two indices are a matter for the OECD. The effect of each index will depend on the exact nature of the calculations performed.
