To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if she will make a statement on the current progress towards securing an improvement in the welfare of live animals in transit.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps she has taken to persuade the EC properly to regulate the transport of live animals; and if she will make a statement.

There has been no resolution as yet of the differences that emerged at the Agriculture Council in December, when my right hon. Friend refused to accept measures which did not offer sufficient safeguards for animal welfare.
