§ Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action he will take to ensure that the Government of South Africa after the elections of 27 April will promote educational opportunities for all; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydCurrently more than half of our bilateral aid to South Africa is spent on increasing access to, and improving the quality of, education and training for those disadvantaged by past policies. Education will continue to feature prominently in our growing aid programme, now running at some £15 million a year.
We will discuss with the new South African Government how best to support their efforts to reconstruct the education system on a professional, equitable and affordable basis.
