Whether they have received any representations from the National Council for Abducted Children concerning the application in the United Kingdom of the Hague Convention and the European Convention on child abduction; whether they accept that reform of national and international law is needed to protect children from abduction; and, if so, what action they are proposing to take.
§ The Lord Chancellor (Lord Mackay of Clashfern)The Government are not aware of any specific recent representations from the National Council for Abducted Children concerning the application in the United Kingdom of the European Convention and the Hague Convention on child abduction. The Government are convinced that adherence to the conventions by existing contracting states, together with the adoption of the conventions by other states, can assist considerably in cases of child abduction. The Child Abduction and Custody Act 1985 incorporates the conventions into domestic law and there are currently no plans to change the law.
