To ask the President of the Board of Trade (1) what help his Department has given to Master Services Group (Leather Master) to develop hydro-carbon technology;

(2) what steps the Government have taken to encourage the development of safe substitutes for dry cleaning fluids.

Mr. McLoughlin

The DTI is supporting two projects to encourage the development of safe substitutes for dry cleaning fluids. These are:

  1. (i) a project under the environmental management options scheme DEMOS lead by Master Services Group with a grant of £134,332 over 13 months to support the research and development of a hydrocarbon non-halogenated fluid; and
  2. (ii) an award of £45,000 made under the small firms merit award for research and technology to assist a project lead by ECO Cleansing Products, aimed at combing the use of a new solvent with ultrasound and de-humidification chambers.
