§ Mr. SpellarTo ask the President of the Board of Trade what assessment he has made of whether the current actions of the Malaysian Government in relation to buying British are in breach of GATT regulations; and what action he proposes to take.
§ Mr. NeedhamAs long as any Malaysian action is limited to direct purchases by Government, there would be no breach of GATT rules, since Malaysia has not signed the GATT agreement on Government procurement. The Government will continue to monitor the position carefully, including by keeping in close touch with United Kingdom companies that may be affected.
