The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your Parliamentary Question asking what was the total number of people imprisoned in each year since 1979.Information on the number of receptions into Prison Service establishments for the years 1979 to 1991 is published in the 1989 and 1991 editions of "Prison Statistics, England and Wales" 768W (Table 1.14, Cm 1221 and 2157) copies of which are available in the Library of the House. The latest available provisional information for 1992 and 1993 is given in the attached table.
